A Most Hearty Welcome to the Royal Rugby Dinner Website! This website is the result of an unrelenting enthusiasm shown by the Old Royalists’ Rugby Dinner (ORRD) Committee, and, in particular, the untiring effort and zeal of certain members of the Committee, who wish to remain anonymous. The website is owned and administered by the ORRD Committee. It is dedicated primarily to all Royalists Rugby Players, young and old, as well as to those who are, have been and will be, concerned with the Game of Rugby at Royal.
The Old Royalists Rugby Dinner (ORRD), one may recall, is the brainchild of two great Old Royalist sportsmen and rugby stalwarts, Mahesa Rodrigo and Gamini Salgado, who, in 1966, mustered a few keen old Royalists rugby players of different Eras into a Committee to set the ball rolling. Gamini Salgado was the first Chairman of that inaugural Committee in which two past Royal rugby captains, to wit, K. W. W. Edwards (1954) and Ratna Sivaratnam (1957), both dashing flankers, performed as secretary and treasurer respectively. The ORRD had a fine initial run from 1966 to 1973. After an unaccountable lull from 1974-1982 it was revived in 1983 to coincide with the centenary rugby match of the Royal-Trinity series, which was the return Bradby of that year played in Colombo. Two past Principals of Royal, E. L. Bradby (1939-1945), the donor of the Bradby Shield, and J. C. A. Corea (1946-1953) were honoured guests at the revived Dinner. From its very inception in 1966 to this day the ORRD Committee has strenuously endeavoured to keep the spirit, the traditions and the flavour of the Dinner just the way it’s Founders intended. The ORRD has been carefully nurtured over the years and has grown into the Institution it is today, well honed and integrated with all that is Royal and Royal Rugby. It provides space and opportunity annually for Old Royalists Ruggerites from all over the world to meet, greet and revive old memories in a spirit of splendid Camaraderie, at Bradby time in Colombo.
It is the same spirit of the ORRD and an unremitting love for Royal and her Rugby that has impelled the ORRD Committee to venture into creating the Royal Rugby Dinner Website. A visitor to the Site will be pleased to note the several aspects that the site deals with. It endeavours to project all matters connected with Royal Rugby and the Royal Rugby Dinner. It is hoped it will not only be a veritable reservoir of information but also a useful reference point for everyone who intends visiting it. May you enjoy your visit as much or more than the Committee enjoyed designing and presenting it!
